SOLAR COMPASS 1111

A Contemporary Light Compass for Direction, Awareness and Connection
Clifton Mahangoe, 1973

Solar Compass 1111 is a sculpture, light compass and contemporary non-religious altar exploring orientation — in the outer world and within ourselves. The work is part of Mahangoe’s mission to bring more light to Earth and create places where people remember their connection to something larger than themselves.

Inspired by Jantar Mantar in India, Mahangoe transforms the sundial from an instrument of time into an indicator of light and inner direction.
Four quartz crystal spheres represent the cardinal directions and the elements earth, water, fire and air. A fifth sphere at the center represents inner light and connection — the subtle life force known as chi or prana.

The geometry refers to the Flower of Life, symbolizing harmony and interconnectedness.
Sunlight continuously transforms the work through light, shadow and reflection, bringing earth, time and cosmos together.

The work brings together elements of Mahangoe’s daily practice: water, the four directions, the elements and 11:11 meditation. Through attention and intention, 11:11 becomes a moment to connect with light, transforming the sculpture into a place of awareness and connection.

Designed to exist both outdoors and indoors, Solar Compass 1111 can function in a garden as a contemporary solar light indicator, responding directly to the movement of the sun. Inside a home or contemplative space, it becomes a sculptural altar — a place for reflection, meditation and connection.

Light becomes direction.
Direction becomes awareness.
Awareness becomes connection.
